Alan Knight MBE — A Life of Loyalty, Service and Courage
Alan Knight MBE was far more than a legendary Portsmouth goalkeeper. He was a man, from Balham in London, who gave his life to this football club and this city.
For more than two decades, he stood between the posts at Fratton Park, making 801 appearances for Portsmouth between 1978 and 2000 — a remarkable record that made him the goalkeeper with the most appearances for a single English club. To generations of Pompey supporters, he was simply and will always remain “The Legend.”
But Alan's greatest saves were not necessarily made on a football pitch. After retiring from professional football, he devoted himself to helping others. He became an ambassador for the club and a tireless supporter of community causes, particularly work involving young people, education, addiction recovery and mental health. His willingness to speak honestly about his own struggles helping others understand that asking for help is not a weakness, but an act of courage.
That generosity of spirit was recognised when Alan was awarded the MBE in 2001. More recently, the City of Portsmouth honoured him with the Freedom of the City — a fitting tribute to someone whose identity had become so deeply intertwined with the place he represented for most of his life.
Alan's connection with Portsmouth was never simply about football. He understood what the club meant to its supporters: belonging, family, pride and hope. He carried that understanding with him long after his playing days had ended.
Even when faced with difficult personal circumstances, he continued to think of others. Following his diagnosis with advanced prostate cancer, Alan chose to speak publicly about his experience, encouraging men to recognise symptoms and seek medical advice rather than putting it off. His instinct remained the same — if sharing his story could help
somebody else, then it was worth doing.
There are football records that will preserve Alan Knight's name in the history books. There are honours and statistics that will tell part of his story. But those who knew him, met him or simply watched him play will remember something much more important: the warmth of the man behind the legend. He was a goalkeeper who became a symbol of loyalty, a footballer who became a community champion, and a local hero who never forgot where he belonged.
He still is and always will be “the Legend”.
